The AIA (American Institute of Architects) requires members to complete eighteen (18) hours of continuing education (CEHs) every year to retain their membership.
- Requirement: Eighteen (18) hours total, of which twelve (12) - was eight (8) until 2011 - must be HSW (Health, Safety & Welfare) credits. Of the twelve (12) HSW credits, at least four (4) must be SD (Sustainable Design) credits.
- Cycle: Annual (calendar year).
- Acceptable Credits: HSW and SD credits may only be earned by completing courses offered by an AIA CES Registered Provider, who is responsible for reporting HSW and SD credits to the AIA. General (non-HSW) credits may be earned via courses offered by providers outside of the AIA CES Registered Provider network, in which case the member is responsible for self-reporting credits to the AIA. Note: Design Arts Seminars, Inc. is an AIA CES Registered Passport Provider.
- Reporting of Credits: AIA CES Registered Providers must report credits to the AIA for inclusion on a member's transcript. Self-reporting by members is only allowed for non-HSW credits earned via courses offered by providers outside of the AIA CES Provider network.

- Audit: The AIA performs an annual non-compliance member audit.

The Nevada Board of Achitecture, Interior Design and Residential Interior Design requires Nevada-registered architects, interior designers and residential interior designers to complete eight (8) hours of continuing education every year.
- CE Requirement: Eight (8) hours of continuing education, which must address health, safety and welfare (HSW) issues. Two (2) of the eight (8) hours must be code-related.
- CE Cycle: Annual running from January 1 through December 31.
- Acceptable Coursework: A minimum of 4 CEUs must be earned in structured setting (e.g. seminar, internet or correspondence course). A maximum of 4 CEUs may be earned in self-directed setting (activity related to the registrant's profession but not designed and systematically presented as a continuing education activity e.g. publication of an article or book, making a professional or technical presentation, being an active member or officer of professional organization, teaching, etc.)
- Reporting of Credits: Providers CANNOT report continuing education credits earned to the Nevada Board. Registrants are responsible for tracking courses and maintaining supporting documentation in case of an audit. A CEU Tracking Log must be completed and sent with each registrant's renewal. Transcripts and other back-up information will not be accepted by the board, unless a registrant is audited.

The New Mexico Board of Interior Design requires New Mexico-licensed interior designers to complete eight (8) hours of board-approved continuing education every year.

Alabama Board for Registered Interior Designers requires
Alabama-registered interior designers to complete
ten (10) hours of continuing education every year.
- CE Requirement: Ten (10) CEUs (Continuing Education Units) annually (see "CE Cycle" below). All ten (10) CEUs must qualify as Health, Safety & Welfare (HSW) credits. At least four (4) of the ten (10) credits must be related to codes and standards (i.e. ADA, ANSI, BOCA, ICC, LEED, etc).
- CE Cycle: Annual - from October 1 to September 30.
- Acceptable Coursework: At least six (6) of the ten (10) hours must be earned via in-person study (i.e. face-to-face seminars and presentations) and a maximum of four (4) hours may be earned in self-directed setting (i.e. home study, online, correspondence, etc). The Alabama Board does not pre-approve providers of continuing education. Choose continuing education activities for which you will receive a certificate of completion showing verifiable course information (AIA, ASID, IIDA, IDCEC, USGBC, etc. course number). Use your professional judgment to determine if an activity meets the Board's criteria as summarized in this post and - most importantly - as detailed on Board's website (see "Source" at the end of this post for weblink). Registrants have the option to request prior written approval of a proposed CEU at least 6 weeks in advance of the scheduled activity.
